the fact that “eco” and “ethical” are two separate concerns in the global north, and that “eco” is a much more popular concern, with many “eco” products being made in actual sweatshops, is a big part of why i am The Joker

if you think this is an exaggeration or splitting hairs where it doesn’t matter:

i used to work at a Local Organic Produce store that’s popular with the lefties in my city who are interested in food justice. i quit for a lot of reasons, mostly the boss, but something i will always remember is one of our suppliers coming in to drop off produce, being told her check wasn’t ready, and her laughing and responding it didn’t matter – even a low bank account was more than enough to pay the migrants who picked her produce. i am not filling in any blanks here. she said this.

after quitting, this was a common story i told people about my time there. some then became annoyed at me, acting like i was a wokescold trying to undermine the store’s “eco” mission with unrelated “ethical” concerns. but, like – if food justice isn’t for the people making food, who the fuck is it for?

like, don’t get me wrong. my contention here is that the things go hand in hand, and that something which is unethical isn’t actually eco. after all, humans are a part of the fucking ecosystem, and if a product can only be made by unsustainably exploiting humans, then it’s unsustainable. doesn’t matter which chemicals were used in making it, or whether or not animals were factory farmed.

they *cannot* be separated. a product cannot be either eco or ethical — it must be both. a product that is made through human suffering cannot be eco for the reasons you said; a product that causes human suffering by contributing to the destruction of the ecosystem cannot be ethical. it must be both and we must insist on both

is this because i said not to use the r slur

image

this? is this what you’re referring to? yeah i think calling other people slurs is bad

reminder that the people this slur refers to, people with intellectual disabilities, are still campaigning to REDUCE/end its usage, not “reclaim” it. the r word used to be a medical diagnosis–it was never a ‘nice’ term and it was always used for ableist, and generally eugenicist, ends–and it is still included in several state laws, so self advocates with intellectual disabilities have been passing laws around the country to get this word out of laws. under no circumstance does it make sense to “reclaim” this term, especially if you are not affected by the ableism that people with intellectual disabilities face.

[Image description: Two Tweets by @ feIidaen that say: the reemergence of the r slur in common internet lexicon drives me up the fucking wall / everyone got a little to excited about reclaiming fruit and now it’s seen as perfectly acceptable to use derogatory terms with absolutely atrocious history as insults against other people even in the most progressive spaces. stop doing that. End description]

another required reminder for people, because bigots love to forget. Reclaiming is slur does not mean you get to use it as a slur. If you are using it as an insult, you’re not reclaiming it, you are literally just calling people slurs.

Does anyone know that fairy tale where a woman keeps remaking her husband out of animal fat every time he dies? I think it’s from a far northern tribe in North America or Asia but I can’t for the life of me remember which one and Google isn’t helping any

My professor read it out loud to my fairy tale class last year and I never wrote down what book he was reading it out of and it’s been bugging me.

If I remember correctly she made him come back to life by rubbing her genitals on him and there was a several months long mourning period involved every time he died

Google keeps bringing up unhelpful websites no matter what combination of words I put in, unfortunately. I’m usually pretty good at using Google so my last resort is asking y’all. If you know what I’m talking about and have a lead about it I’d really appreciate it.

i definitely remember reading this story, or at least something v similar, and it took a while to remember where/when, but i think i tracked it down

it’s in a collection edited by angela carter called the virago book of fairy tales, i think i read it first in an actual book from the library but i found it on archive.org here:

https://archive.org/details/viragobookoffair0000unse/page/30/mode/2up

(carter credits it in the acknowledgements as coming from another collection called a kayak full of ghosts: eskimo tales gathered and retold by lawrence millman. so if this is the right story, ur professor could have been reading from either of these books.)

Bi women are not rehab centres for lesbians who are struggling with the patriarchy

Girl in Red just did an interview where she delved into a song she wrote about feeling gender and sexuality insecurity in her relationship with a bi woman.

The central idea is that it took (and continues to take) multiple deeply emotional conversations with her partner to begin to work through her insecurity that her partner will eventually prefer men, leave her for a man, and the fact she will never be a man. (and no, she’s not struggling with gender issues or dysphoria personally, this is solely in reaction to her partner being attracted to males)

Combined with the comments under the clip, my little bi heart was shattered.

Biphobia is excused every single day and this comment section was filled with lesbians being really overtly biphobic and then cackling about the fact they were waiting for “the wave of screaming bis” to show up to ‘claim biphobia’

Only…..can someone explain to me how it isn’t fucking biphobia to make your partner walk you through a mental breakdown about THEIR SEXUALITY??

Genuinely explain to me how that isn’t biphobic

I wouldn’t date someone who hyperventilates over the thought that my hair is brown so why tf would I accept multiple deep-relationship convos about a basic fact my partner knew when they chose to date me?

Now, Girl in Red at the very least acknowledged that it wasn’t cool, was 100% her problem etc, and in my opinion she has every right to explore that kind of thing in her art. But the way the comment section reacted was essentially “shut the fuck up bi women, you’ll never know how insecure we are because of how you lot fuck dick and a lesbian writing a song about this is something you just can’t comprehend”

There’s a difference between exploring complex uncomfortable themes in a song, and deciding that it is logical and normal to treat your partner like this.

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

image
image
image
image

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

image

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

image

It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:

image

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

image

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG

Licherally in the midst of drawing a guy and crying at how bad the arms are. Thanks Tumbles

I only ever saw the part where people started drawing the limbs outrageously long and genuinely wanted to know how to fix that, so I’m really thankful to see the rest.

This is just reminding me that I need to pick up a pencil. But I know I’m not going to ever finish the drawing. 🤷‍♀️

what if I couldn’t take it anymore?

Reminder to just say masturbation, sex, vagina, penis, menstruation, fuck, death, kill, boobs, dyke, faggot, etc. like a real adult.

reminder to everyone who doesnt use tiktok: you dont actually get banned for saying these words, people do this to evade others’ tag blockers.

a lot of users DONT want to see this kind of post, so people censor and change words around to get put on peoples “for you” page even if they have been marked as “not interested”. this is part of why it can get really difficult to find posts you actually like on tiktok, is because the algorithm is really bad at guessing that these posts are not actually about “self care”. the creators of these posts are hoping they get forced in front of people who want to see something else.

Oh that’s way worse than what I’d been led to believe was happening

Hi, this is bullshit. TikTok doesn’t have a feature to blacklist certain words like tumblr does wtf? So many other people have reblogged this who explained it better than I do, but yes, accounts have been banned or shadowbanned for using certain words. This isn’t a sneaky way to get around blacklisted tags. Because blacklisted tags don’t fucking exist. In fact a huge chunk of TikTok’s revenue and activity comes from the algorithm showing people things they hate, which notably wouldn’t work if people could easily avoid things they hate. Anyone who has spent any amount of time on that platform and has two braincells to rub together knows this.

This is like the reverse of people coming here wondering how the nonexistent tumblr algorithm works. I am sick of seeing this cold ass take. Stop it.

queeranarchism:

I’d love more riots, but I’m very annoyed to see posts that treat ‘boring meetings’ as a waste of time and smashing windows as a universally effective direct action.

That’s just aesthetic over content. Sometimes you need a boring meeting to analyze systems of power and figure out which windows to smash.

If you push for constant action and can’t be bothered to do the work of developing strategies, many of your actions will be ineffective while some will achieve something out of sheer luck.

Which means you’re spending your energy and risking your safety and freedom without knowing which actions are worth it. Which tells me you’re probably not valuing your energy, safety and freedom very much.

That’s understandable if you’re an angry teenage anarchist, but it’s no way to keep going for decades and I don’t think it’s how we change the world.

People who have never taken public transit before seem to be under the impression that everyone on a bus is ready to stab you meanwhile I have never had that problem and I get to read while I’m stuck in traffic and they don’t.

Also I don’t get stuck in traffic much anyways because the drivers keep going on the freeway even though it gets clogged up with traffic and it’s literally faster to drive on the surface streets where the busses go but whatever I don’t need to pay for a gym membership because I walk to the bus and meanwhile what are you spending your money on? Oil changes so you can keep getting stuck in traffic?

Am I spreading anti-car propaganda? Yes I am and yes I will forever because I don’t need to think about parking. I don’t have to pay for parking. I can just show up at a place and then leave without having to think about any of that. You wish you had it that good. I haven’t set foot in a parking garage in months.

@amtrak-official

I honestly think the reason people are so scared of propaganda is entirely because of fear mongering from the car lobby and anti city sentiments
